Richmond, VA — Stephen Ritz, a renowned educator and the visionary founder of Green Bronx Machine is joining forces with Babylon Micro-Farms as their new brand ambassador, with a shared goal: to accelerate the adoption of vertical farming in classrooms across America. By promoting Babylon’s innovative STEM Garden, Ritz aims to create hands-on, transformative learning opportunities that ignite curiosity and foster a lifelong love of learning in students.

For Ritz, education is more than a series of lessons; it’s about creating experiences that connect students to the world around them. When he first saw the STEM Garden, Ritz immediately recognized its potential to revolutionize learning. “The minute I saw the STEM Garden, I knew I wanted one in my classroom. Beyond being easy to use, the look, the feel, and the finish of the STEM Garden simply exudes quality and generates excitement, interest, and wonder from students and teachers alike,” says Ritz.

Transforming Classrooms with Hands-On Learning

Babylon Micro-Farms chose Ritz as their brand ambassador because he represents the essence of their mission: to make sustainable food production a dynamic part of education. Ritz is known for turning his classrooms into vibrant environments where learning happens through doing—where students plant seeds, watch them grow, and harvest fresh produce, all while developing critical life skills and a deeper understanding of science and sustainability. To date, Ritz has grown more than 300,000 pounds of vegetables with children en route to outstanding school performance and improved social determinants of health.

“The STEM Garden makes you want to learn more, ask questions, taste the produce, and get involved—the learning possibilities here are endless,” Ritz adds. “This is what innovation looks like!”

A Shared Vision for Educational Innovation

The partnership centers around the STEM Garden, Babylon Micro-Farms’ cutting-edge hydroponic farming system designed for K-12 classrooms. With this tool, educators can transform lessons in plant biology, environmental science, and agriculture into engaging, hands-on experiences. The STEM Garden supports cultivating healthy eating habits and a deeper connection to nature while promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Marc Oosterhuis, CEO of Babylon Micro-Farms, believes Ritz is the ideal advocate for the STEM Garden. “Stephen’s enthusiasm and dedication to sustainable education make him an ideal partner for us. His firsthand experience with the challenges educators face and his understanding of the value of engaging students through meaningful, hands-on experiences make him a perfect fit for this role,” says Oosterhuis.

Cultivating a New Generation of Healthy Eaters and Engaged Learners

As part of his role, Ritz will lead initiatives to promote the STEM Garden in schools nationwide. This includes developing educational programs tailored to various learning environments, conducting community outreach to encourage sustainable practices, and participating in speaking engagements where he can share his unique approach to education and urban farming.

“I’m grateful to the folks at Babylon Micro-Farms for their interest and support of the work that we do at Green Bronx Machine and can’t wait to grow the next generation of healthy eaters, healthy learners, and urban farmers with them,” Ritz shares.

From Inspiration to Action

For Babylon Micro-Farms, this partnership is about more than just promoting a product; it’s about fostering a movement. Together with Ritz, they aim to bring the excitement and benefits of vertical farming to classrooms nationwide, inspiring both educators and students to embrace sustainable agriculture and healthier lifestyles.

“There are so many wonderful touch points attached to this opportunity including the fact that the STEM Garden is built here in America. This drives entrepreneurship, innovation, and 21st-century workforce development at a time when we need it most,” says Ritz. “What teacher would not want this in their classroom? I can’t wait to get my STEM Garden to the Bronx and invite Mayor Adams and Chancellor Banks to come visit. To think we will have the same technology in the Bronx that inspired Vice President Kamala Harris to visit Babylon Micro-Farms is beyond inspiring for our students and teachers and makes it that much more relevant and exciting for all.”

A Vision for Every Classroom in America

With Stephen Ritz’s passion for experiential learning and Babylon Micro-Farms’ innovative technology, the goal is clear:  to accelerate the adoption of vertical farming in schools and to provide every student with the chance to engage in meaningful, hands-on learning. By placing a STEM Garden in every classroom, they hope to inspire the next generation of thinkers, doers, and sustainable innovators. “This simple, classroom-based, easy-to-use, self-contained unit is the perfect introduction to urban farming for young students and exposes older students to the world and possibilities of CEA – controlled environment agriculture – which has proven to be a viable and lucrative career path and opportunity for urban students, disconnected youth, and second opportunity adults.”

Babylon Micro-Farms, a pioneer in indoor hydroponic farming systems, has been approved by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) to license the Works with WELL trademark for its flagship product, Galleri, the first food-safe indoor vertical farming system with this distinction.

Galleri’s alignment with health features in the WELL Building Standard validates Babylon’s commitment to promoting healthy eating and access to nature. The hydroponic indoor farm system is confirmed to align with three features under the WELL Nourishment concept. Specifically, it aligns with feature N12.1 for providing gardening space, N07.1 for providing nutrition education, and N04.1 for optimizing food advertising. Galleri is also aligned with two features under the WELL Mind concept, M02.1 for providing connection to nature and M09.1 for providing nature access indoors.

The WELL Nourishment concept requires the availability of fruits and vegetables and nutritional transparency. It encourages the creation of food environments where the healthiest choice is the easiest choice. Incorporating a Babylon Galleri Micro-Farm in a project’s lobby, dining area, or workspace helps achieve the aligned WELL features for the project, earning points toward WELL Certification goals.

As workers return to the office, Babylon Micro-Farms helps businesses promote holistic, healthy living. Galleri’s elegant, biophilic design can help boost employee mental health, inspire better eating habits, and drive a desire to live healthily. Return on investment goes beyond the produce growing within each Micro-Farm.

“We are thrilled to join forces with IWBI through sustainable and innovative farming practices,” said Alexander Olesen, CEO & Co-Founder of Babylon Micro-Farms. “I’m personally proud of our team’s work to create a sustainable experience that benefits the communities we serve. Fostering connection among people around the food they eat; motivating them to lead healthier, more sustainable lives.”

Each Micro-Farm uses remote monitoring to ensure optimal plant growth and health while using ten times less water than traditional agricultural practices. Babylon Micro-Farms has provided efficient and environmentally friendly hydroponic systems to partners at universities, senior living communities, resorts, and corporate offices nationwide.

The Works with WELL alignment for Babylon Micro-Farms’ Galleri represents an exciting step forward for sustainable food production and healthy indoor environments. The WELL alignment recognizes innovative and sustainable design practices that benefit people and the planet.

5/4/2023 – Richmond, Va

All great things start small, and only this country has the market, culture, and unfailing optimism that encourages people to take risks that can turn dreams into reality.

At Babylon, we’re empowering businesses and communities to grow their own food on-site, all year round, in a way that captivates the imagination about where your food comes from.

Indoor farming can enable anyone to grow their own food, using 90% less water, without the use of pesticides.

This is an essential tool for food security and the fight against climate change.

Our goal is to develop an ecosystem of accessible and affordable vertical farming products powered by the BabylonIQ remote management platform so that anyone can be a vertical farmer.

We’ve grown this idea from a school project to a scaling enterprise with clients like IKEA, LinkedIn, and Aramark.

The team has worked tirelessly over six years to develop our technology and commercialize the most advanced modular vertical farming systems on the market today. Each 15 sqft module is the equivalent of a 2000 sqft area of outdoor farmland.

The products, technology, and manufacturing process that you see here are setting the standard for Micro-Farming globally.

Our decision to move to Richmond and the opportunity zone here in Scott’s Addition has provided a strong foundation for our fast-growing business and enabled us to build a home for our 37 team members.

I’d like to extend my deepest thanks to Virginia Venture Partners, SSBCI, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the Biden-Harris Administration for their tremendous support. The grant funding we received has allowed us to get where we are today.

We are deeply honored to show you the work that we do at Babylon Micro-Farms and demonstrate the potential for small businesses to be at the very cutting edge of sustainable technology.

With this administration’s support, our industry has a bright future.

Without further ado, it is my honor to welcome the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris.

The 6,762-passenger MSC World Europa currently docked in Doha, Qatar is introducing a new restaurant concept, branded the Chef’s Garden Kitchen,  which is a Babylon Micro-Farms powered hydroponic garden at sea with herbs, greens and garnishes grown onboard.

Michelin-starred chef, TV personality and author Niklas Ekstedt has collaborated with MSC Cruises to design the menu for the specialty restaurant Chef’s Garden Kitchen, focussing on the natural ingredients and a farm-to-ocean ethos. Born in Sweden, the son of a produce seller, Niklas Ekstedt began his strong connection with nature and the Earth’s flavours at a young age. This new restaurant will feature the first-at-sea hydroponic micro-farm in the world and guests will be treated to a uniquely immersive experience with the master chef preparing Ekstedt’s extraordinary creations in an open kitchen against a backdrop of panoramic sea views.

Chef Ekstedt shared: “Working with MSC Cruises to develop a new dining concept on MSC World Europa has been an exciting experience and we have created something really special and unique. The menu is rooted in my core philosophy that everything needs to start with the very best natural ingredients and as such the dishes are simple but full of flavour and will feature the hydroponic micro-greens that are grown in on board in the restaurant to enhance the flavours, texture and colours.”

Alexander Olesen Babylon Micro-Farms Founder and CEO

“Growing fresh produce onboard a cruise ship that sails all around the world is a perfect illustration of Babylon’s remote management technology. From our headquarters in Richmond, Virginia, we are able to deliver a safe, reliable, and convenient growing experience for Niklas Eksedt and his team. On-site Micro-Farms are going to be an important part of the supply chain for fresh ingredients and it’s exciting to push the boundaries of local food production with this world-first installation on the high seas.” We are appreciative of MSC’s confidence in Babylon and our micro-farms and discussions are already taking place about roll out to additional MSC ships under construction.

“We are proud to be the exclusive partner of GROWFOAM® for small scale on-site farms in North America. GROWFOAM® retains the ease of use of current growth medium while reducing waste thus bringing a new level of sustainability to an already sustainable system.” Said Alexander Olesen (Babylon CEO)

Six Micro Farms Installed Across Virginia Commonwealth University, University of South Carolina, Lander University, and Western Carolina University

ARAMARK

Babylon Micro-Farms, the intelligent, accessible and market-leading indoor micro-farm company, is excited to announce their partnership with Aramark, the global leader in food, facilities and uniform services – as well as a selection of the  universities Aramark works with, including Virginia Commonwealth University, University of South Carolina, Lander University, and Western Carolina University.

Aramark will be installing 1-2 Babylon micro farms at each university campus, serving over 90,000 students in total. Each university plans on using Babylon Micro-Farms to increase student engagement, with activities such as having students take ownership of a row of plants within the farm, sharing recipes with students that will incorporate the farm, and educating the students on what the micro farms are and their impact.

Matt Rogers, Aramark’s Vice President of Growth states, ”We are extremely excited to be able to partner with Babylon Farms at VCU and many other campuses in the near future. In addition, with Babylon’s new headquarters located in downtown Richmond, we see several great partnerships being fostered at VCU and beyond from this connectivity.”

The partnership bodes well specifically between Babylon Micro-Farms and VCU, as they share the common initiative of sustainability and providing locally sourced options to the people they serve. Promising locally sourced initiatives in more ways than one, VCU chose Babylon Micro-Farms as a partner as they are local to each other, both being headquartered in the same city of Richmond, Virgina. Additionally, VCU is providing their students with locally sourced food through the Babylon micro farms that are installed on campus.

Working closely with VCU, Resident District Manager Pam Neff shares, “Aside from the beauty Babylon Farms brings to our facilities, we are thrilled to have a local partnership that allows us to continue on a path towards greater sustainability at Virginia Commonwealth University. Our students appreciate the emphasis that Babylon Farm brings to healthy eating.”

Built on the basis of sustainability, Babylon Micro-Farms continues to bring the benefits of sustainable hydroponic farming to more and more people every day, now especially university students. Babylon Micro-Farms is able to achieve their goal through their on-site farming service, making farming simple for anyone. Babylon is the most affordable, efficient, and advanced vertical farming platform available, remotely managed through the cloud with unparalleled customer service.

“We are proud to have partners who share the same vision as us, and we are working towards a healthier future for how food is grown” shares Babylon Micro-Farms CEO, Alexander Olesen.
